Painting Classes Custom Tailored to Guests
Painting classes cover a wide range of art, something to suit everyone under the sun. In Costa Rica there are many artists who are inspired by the tropical flora and fauna and the weather isn’t so bad either! I invite guests to my farm in Santa Barbara de Heredia,Costa Rica to learn how to paint canvas rugs, or floor cloths and canvas place mats.
One such guest had a special request. Barbara had never taken any painting classes but she had just purchased a new couch and was taken with the idea of painting her own canvas rug for her home.
When she contacted me with the idea of making her own custom rug I was thrilled and asked for measurements so the canvas area rug could be prepared ahead of time. There is a lot of preparation before any design is painted. Canvas needs to be preshrunk, measured, cut and sewn. We apply a base coat and then two top coats of the color for the rug.
When clients come to the painting classes any size canvas rug is prepared taking 4-5 days to get ready! Barbara’s rug measured 4’ x 6’ for her living room.
Selecting Designs From Stamps
Barbara has a thing for spirals but she wasn’t clear on how to incorporate spirals into her design. First we looked at the catalog of stamps in the art studio. I have been creating stamps for several years and have a large array of styles and designs already made. Barbara chose a crisscross stamp often used for my Africa Design rug.
She marked out her borders and used the stamp for the center of the canvas rug. Then she painted the border of the rug a deeper tan color and had to leave it to dry. Not everyone who comes to our painting classes has the opportunity to come for more than one day. Often they are tourists who are on a schedule.
Barbara did return for a second class to apply her spiral stamp. Her new couch was a turquoise blue and the newly created stamp made just for her, had a deep turquoise color. The effect was dramatic but not too busy. She placed the stamp randomly around the border as if the spirals were floating. One last touch of a thin inner border painted with a deep chocolate brown and the result was stunning!
After leaving the paint to dry for several days, we then apply 5 coats of our polyurethane sealer. We do this for all the guests in our painting classes and either deliver or ship depending on their location.
Barbara was kind enough to share photos of her new rug in her home. A beautiful canvas area rug and having done it in our own painting class made it all the more special!
