Your home is your expression. Allow an empty space to speak to you. Be patient. Every corner of your home has the right to careful consideration. I appreciate it when someone writes to me and says, “I’ve been thinking about this space for a long time. Now I know what belongs there.”
Let it be fun.
The fun thing about making a custom rug for your home is the freedom to be creative. We make a rug any size and shape to fit into exactly the right area.
Julietta called me with the idea for a round rug of the Circle Design with seashells and urchins. She had the spot picked out and was waiting for the inspiration to find the right fit. It helped that I finally posted the Circle Rug Designs on my Design Gallery. The Blue Circle Rug with Sea Urchins offers the fun colorful option she was looking for.
The floor of the small room adjacent to her kitchen is smooth concrete with a deep blue color. Here her idea was to select a blue background that would melt into the background of the floor and the circles and shells would pop out. What a great idea!
Selecting the Colors
I sent her the color codes for Sherwin Williams so she could select the blue color for the background closest to the blue on the floor.
From there it’s my personal journey to create the unique designs within the circles. I recalled the plants I painted on my hand painted cotton knit dress designs with fish and shells. Some circles resemble a pond with a pool of light. The mosaic design in a circle is always fascinating.
There is a state of mind called Flow as written by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (don’t ask me to pronounce it!) Flow, also known colloquially as being in the zone, is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity.
I go somewhere and when I come back the circle is painted and I think “Wow, that’s cool.”

It’s not finished until it’s in your home.
I was thrilled to see the rug in its new home, a small room that needed a bright pop of color.
A perfect fit.
Whatever design makes you feel right, no area is too large or small for a custom canvas rug. Take your time. Walk by that spot a thousand times until that pull, that urge, that “Ah ha!” comes to you. Knowing you have the ability to create your own rug lifts the responsibility of trying to find the rug to fit the space.
